What makes a person unclean before God? After exposing the wicked hearts of the Pharisees and scribes, Jesus answers that question. It is not what goes into the body that defiles a person, but what comes out of it, because sinful actions flow from a sinful heart. This reality teaches us that outward actions cannot purify an unclean heart- only the redemptive work of Jesus Christ can!

What makes a person unclean before God? The Pharisees and scribes confront Jesus in this passage because his disciples have not been washing their hands. The concern is not physical hygiene, but spiritual purity- do external things make a person impure? Before answering, Jesus exposes these religious leaders because they have impure hearts, as demonstrated by their legalism and hypocrisy.
A Stroll Across the Sea

Once again, the disciples of Jesus find themselves on the Sea of Galilee with strong winds battering them. Only this time, Jesus is not with them, at least until he walks to them upon the surface of the water and demonstrates his glory as God the Son! And the peace that his presence brings shows us that we also find peace by beholding the glory of Jesus Christ.
5,000 Hungry Sheep

The feeding of the 5,000 is the only miracle during Jesus’s ministry that is recorded in all four gospel accounts. In this sermon, we examine Mark’s account, where Jesus has compassion upon the people who are like sheep without a shepherd. We see from this encounter that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who perfectly guides and provides for his sheep.

In this passage, Jesus returns to his hometown of Nazareth, but instead of getting a warm welcome, his own people give him the cold shoulder. He then sends out his apostles to extend his message and ministry to the surrounding towns and villages, warning them that they too may face rejection. God’s people are called to trust in Christ even when the world refuses to believe in him, and we are called to testify about Christ even when the world rejects him.
